Re-Imagining the City in the Age of Social Media
Livehoods offer a new way to conceptualize the dynamics, structure, and character of a city by analyzing the social media its residents generate. By looking at people's checkin patterns at places across the city, we create a mapping of the different dynamic areas that comprise it. Each Livehood tells a different story of the people and places that shape it.

Using data such as tweets and check-ins, we are able to discover the hidden structures of the city with machine learning. Our techniques reveal a snap-shot of the dynamic areas the comprise the city, which we call Livehoods.

Android Market reaches 10 billionth app download

Graph_only_3

Interesting stats from BI - Android with over 600 devices in the market globally is definitely picking up momentum with consumers through choice. However the article notes that both app stores are growing at around the same rate.

Via: Business Insider
-----
This morning, Google announced that the Android Market had passed its 10 billionth app download.
Apple got there first -- it passed 10 billion in January.

It also got there faster, hitting 10 billion about 30 months after its launch in July 2008. Android launched in October 2008, so took about 38 months to reach the 10 billion mark.

However, Google also announced it is now at a billion downloads per month. Apple hit that mark in July of this year. So both stores hit that magic number about three years after launch. And both are now growing at around the same rate.

One more note: this doesn't measure the total number of apps downloaded because there are multiple app stores for Android. There's only one for Apple.

The Mobile Blue Ocean

Us-phone-platform-install-base

Via Business Insider
-----
ComScore has data out on the US phone market and Asymco breaks them down, including this great chart at right on the evolution of the US phone platform install base.

It highlights a few key points, some of which are already known, but some of which don't get talked about enough:

  • The Blue Ocean is still HUGE. For all that we (justifiably, more on which below) talk about who among AppleGoogle, RIM, Microsoft et al. is winning in smartphones, the biggest opportunity remains the Blue Ocean of getting smartphones in the hands of non-smartphone users. (This is true of the US, but also very true of developing markets where the shift to mobile is enormous.)
