PayPal's Mobile Payment Rocket

Mobile payments are on an exponential trajectory.

PayPal revealed  that they processed nearly $4 billion in mobile payments last year, up from a miniscule $25 million in 2008. To give you an idea of mobile commerce's astronomical growth, PayPal initially predicted $1.5 billion in mobile payments for the year before raising before raising projections to $3 billion in June.

With rival Square now processing $11 million a day (up from $4 million in July), we are very bullish on the mobile payments market.

Forrester estimated in June that mobile commerce will reach $31 billion by 2016, and even that may look conservative now. Yesterday at CES, eBay CEO John Donahoe said that PayPal expects to handle $7 billion in mobile transactions this year.

Twine : Listen to your world, talk to the Internet

Want to hook up things to the Web? Maybe you want to get a tweet when your laundry's done, or get an email when the basement floods while you're on vacation. Even if you're good with electronics and programming, these are involved projects. Instead of worrying about wiring or networking code, you can focus on your idea.

Android Market reaches 10 billionth app download

Graph_only_3

Interesting stats from BI - Android with over 600 devices in the market globally is definitely picking up momentum with consumers through choice. However the article notes that both app stores are growing at around the same rate.

Via: Business Insider
-----
This morning, Google announced that the Android Market had passed its 10 billionth app download.
Apple got there first -- it passed 10 billion in January.

It also got there faster, hitting 10 billion about 30 months after its launch in July 2008. Android launched in October 2008, so took about 38 months to reach the 10 billion mark.

However, Google also announced it is now at a billion downloads per month. Apple hit that mark in July of this year. So both stores hit that magic number about three years after launch. And both are now growing at around the same rate.

One more note: this doesn't measure the total number of apps downloaded because there are multiple app stores for Android. There's only one for Apple.

The Mobile Blue Ocean

Us-phone-platform-install-base

Via Business Insider
-----
ComScore has data out on the US phone market and Asymco breaks them down, including this great chart at right on the evolution of the US phone platform install base.

It highlights a few key points, some of which are already known, but some of which don't get talked about enough:

  • The Blue Ocean is still HUGE. For all that we (justifiably, more on which below) talk about who among AppleGoogle, RIM, Microsoft et al. is winning in smartphones, the biggest opportunity remains the Blue Ocean of getting smartphones in the hands of non-smartphone users. (This is true of the US, but also very true of developing markets where the shift to mobile is enormous.)

Transmedia Design for the 3 Screens (Make That 5)

Visual consistency is a huge issue with cross-platform (or you may say Transmedia) design on projects. Either clients don't care or designers are forced to fit a website peg into a mobile hole. Jakob chucks his 2 cents into the ring on Transmedia User Experience.

-------
Via Useit.com

Summary:
Mobile use will rise, but desktop computers will remain important, forcing companies to design for multiple platforms, requiring continuity in visual design, features, user data, and tone of voice.

To conclude:
Cross-platform UIs should be different but similar.

Why Mobile UX is more than "users on the go"

Interesting points in the article - I actually think one of the follow up from Nicholas Paredes resonates a lot.

"It is a mobile perspective, and mobile is different from the general web in my opinion. I am designing behavior not websites."
