Hype: Why Location Based Service Foursquare May Actually Be Worth $600 Million

Foursquare

Edited version:

Location app Foursquare announced $50 million in additional funding today, valuing the 2-year-old company at a reported $600 million.

What will Foursquare ad deals and integrations ultimately look like? How will they be measured in terms of effectiveness? That's all still to be determined. Also: How much are marketers actually willing to pay for Foursquare programs?

Marketers have certainly been eager to experiment with the location-based service, which finds 10 million users -- that's total, not active -- accessing the app to tag themselves at restaurants, bars and parks to share with friends, and get discounts and recommendations.

"[Foursquare] is about as close to the epicenter of social local and mobile as anything I know," Mr. Tobaccowala added. "That bridge between the analog world and mobile, there's going to be a lot of money made. Foursquare has the potential to leverage that."

The Top 10 Mobile Applications of 2012 (back in 2009)

Back in late 2009, Gartner predicted applications in the categories of mobile payments, money tranfsers, location-based services, mobile health monitoring and those that provide fast access to content will be among the top mobile applications in the next few years.

Gartner’s list of top ten consumer mobile applications for 2012:

  • Money Transfer
  • Location-Based Services
  • Mobile Search
  • Mobile Browsing
  • Mobile Health Monitoring
  • Mobile Payment
  • Near Field Communication Services
  • Mobile Advertising
  • Mobile Instant Messaging
  • Mobile Music

2010 breakdown
Location, search, music and browsing was big in 2010 - no surprises there. New players like Square and local banks such ANZ both released apps that allow simple Money Transfer / Mobile payments - whilst in-app purchases made an excellent model to up-sell consumers after a free initial download.

So as we stroll in to 2011 will the predictions of NFC and Advertiser will to spend more on Mobile Ads be realised?
